Gia M. Hamilton is a healer and culture bearer who studied herbology and midwifery under her grandmother Edna D. Hamblin who was one of the integrating nurses at Charity Hospital in the twentieth century in New Orleans. Hamilton has studied herbology, reiki, massage therapy, farming, and acupuncture. Gia also employs Social Magicâ„¢ methodology to investigate land, labor, and cultural production while examining social connectivity within institutions and community as a creative. As a culture bearer, Hamilton co-founded an independent African-centered school, Little Maroons in 2006; in Brooklyn, and later, she opened a creative and healing incubator space- Gris Gris Lab in 2009. Gia currently lives in New Orleans with her five sons and is completing an ethnographic memoir entitled Modern Matriarch.
