Book presentation with Joris Lindhout & Maaike Gouwenberg of Deltaworkers and Erik Kiesewetter of Constance New Orleans

To Live in the South, One Has To Be a Scar Lover is an essay bundle that aims to deconstruct the romantic and mythical image Hollywood has created of the Southern States. Editors and Deltaworkers founders Maaike Gouwenberg and Joris Lindhout will read fragments from the different essays and introduce their story of the South.

Dutchies Gouwenberg & Lindhout came to the South in 2010 on an investigative roadtrip exploring the Southern Gothic. They never really left and are currently running the Deltaworkers international residency program in New Orleans.

To Live in the South, One Has To Be a Scar Lover is designed by Erik Kiesewetter, who has been pivotal in introducing the South to Gouwenberg & Lindhout and is a board member of Deltaworkers.

Deltaworkers is a nomadic artistic production and residence program that investigates the southern states of the U.S. as one of the last mythical places in the West. We host and present European artists from different disciplines in New Orleans, a city that forms the perfect gateway to the south; a region where many of the historical, socio-political and cultural roots of U.S culture can be found.

Maaike Gouwenberg is a curator based in Rotterdam. She is interested in performative practices. In 2010, Gouwenberg initiated A.P.E. (art projects era) with artist Keren Cytter. A.P.E develops projects that cannot necessarily be realised within traditional institutional formats or frameworks. Since 2014 Maaike runs the residency program Deltaworkers in New Orleans, is one of the short film programmers at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. She is a board member of musical theatre group Touki Delphine, film festival Cracking the Frame, and artist run space 1646.

Joris Lindhout is an artist with an unruly practice. He is a storyteller who investigates weird tales and lives between the Netherlands and New Orleans. Last year he wrote a novelette and currently he is working on a script for a short film. He is the co-founder of the Deltaworkers—an artist residency in New Orleans—and exhibitionist.nl, a website presenting an overview of the Netherlands and Flanders.

Erik Kiesewetter (b. 1981) is an independent multi-disciplinary designer primarily focused on publication, identity, and printed design. He studied graphic design at University of Louisiana in Lafayette and in 2004, set up his first studio in New Orleans.

In 2005 Erik founded Constance, a full-service publishing, design, and event coordination hub. It was created to nourish and strengthen the arts community of New Orleans, by providing design, consulting and Risograph printing services.
