NOFS and the Contemporary Arts Center present: Film Series 2008 - I Always Do My Collars First & Random Lunacy
Contemporary Arts Center
7:30pm
Another chance to see two of NOFF 2007's favorite films!!!
I Always Do My Collars First - a documentary that delivers an artful and unexpectedly entertaining look at what is often ignored as a mundane chore. It's a film about ironing, but it's also a meaningful meditation on so much more.
The story follows four dynamic Cajun women in French Louisiana as they go about their daily lives demonstrating how the simple ritual of ironing weaves its way throughout the fabric of family life and their sense of identity.
Through first-person narration, the women share with us a rare look at the rich interior life lived by wives and mothers in a traditional culture.
Directed by Conni Castille & Allison Bohl. USA. 2006. 25 min. Winner, Louisiana Filmmaker Award, New Orleans Film Festial 2007.
Random Lunacy - an astonishing portrait of the radically itinerant Poppa Neutrino, father of New Orleans' own songstress Ingrid Lucia. Neutrino could have been a captain of industry, but his belief that "rent is the thing that beats us" caused him instead to choose a homeless existence for himself and his family.
Unencumbered by possessions, save for a video camera kept rolling since the 80's, he led his "tribe" on a quest for pure freedom and adventure.
Poppa's camera recorded first-hand a life of sleeping in cars, trucks, and on remote beaches, and the family's time spent traveling with a Mexican circus. The rafts they built from street scraps, which they then would live aboard, exemplified their consummate ingenuity. Eventually one such vessel was pitted against the Atlantic Ocean.
Directed by Victor Zimet & Stephanie Silber. 2007. USA. 60 min.
